The Name

So, if you've read The Boat page, you'll be thinking, how did we get from The Spritely Gromit (Quaintrelle's working name), to Quaintrelle?

We just couldn't think of a name that grabbed us.  So I put out a shout on Facebook for suggestions and said the winner would get a week's holiday on board ;)  Some were good, some were okay, some were crap (sorry FB friends :( ).  We drew up a shortlist of possibles and put up a survey.  'Iris' (Mike's late mum) came up tops.  We didn't want to call the boat Iris.

A few weeks earlier, our friend Vicki Robertson had posted a word on FB, saying this was what she aspired to - "Quaintrelle: a female dandy; a lady who lives life passionately through leisurely pursuits and looking beautiful."  I'd commented to Mike, 'Oooo that's a good name for a narrowboat!!' and he'd just grunted.  However, after the survey hoo-ha, he pipes up, 'What was that name Vicki came up with?'  And so it was Quaintrelle was named.  When I asked Mike why he hadn't just said he'd liked the name way back when Vicki posted it, he said, 'I didn't want to give her the satisfaction of winning our naming the boat competition.'  (That's the sort of relationship that two have :) ).

Quaintrelle - a name for all seasons and environments.
People often ask us what the name means, and I give the definition.  But I've had to add '......and that's the boat!' because some people seemed to think I was describing me!!!  The name also begins with Q, which is what our surname begins with, so it's all good.

Quaintrelle - living her life passionately through her leisurely pursuits and looking beautiful.
